picturesque: Weird library chair!

I seriously can't figure out the purpose of this chair which has been there in my lib since ever!

The weird part is this-

What the hell is the purpose of this design on it?
I am expecting interesting comments on this one...

I think that the chair gives hope to Fat people, who on seeing this chair feel glad that at least someone heavier than them has sat on the chair before. It makes them realise that they are not so heavy after all.
I think the designer of the chair is an overweight creative genius who knows how make fat people happy with subtle designs as this one.
